Sweet Data

Each year, the Science Creative Quarterly (SCQ) publishes what they call the candy hierarchy in an effort to figure out which Halloween candies cause the most joy and despair.

To better understand this data, we created a few visualizations of the results obtained in 2017's survey*.

You can learn more about the candy hierarchy here.

Insight: Top 5 Candies in 2017

How their ranks changed from 2014 to 2017

When analyzing the data, we were able to learn the top ranked candies of 2017. However, we were curious how these candies had ranked in previous years, so we created a bump chart to see these changes.

There are two key takeaways from this graph. First, Reese's hasn't always been #1; in 2016, it was dethroned by Kit Kat. Second, Toblerone seems to have gained more liking after 2015.

*We did not include data points such as "Any full-sized candy bar" or "Cash, or other forms of legal tender," as we wanted to focus on branded candy.
